Fresh Android Apps of the day

VLC Beta (Free)

VLC Beta (NEON version)Though there have been many versions in Google Play over the years, here’s the official VLC app from the open source VideoLAN company. It’s still in beta and the developers state that it could be somewhat unstable and slow (and won’t work for everyone), but clearly some users are already enjoying it. Right now, it’s only for devices with a newer CPU ARMv7, but expect better compatibility in future updates.

Like the desktop version, VLC can handle multiple video and audio formats with aplomb, whether streaming over the Internet or stored locally on your device. It also supports multi-format audio and subtitles and offer a widget for audio controls and cover art. This flexible Android app is a great solution if you ever encounter an unusual media format that your device can’t play.

Imgy (Free)

Imgy WidgetsJust a few weeks ago we featured Tagy, and here’s a similar app from the same developers, albeit with a slight twist. If you’ve ever wanted an unlimited number of icons on your home screen, Imgy can help. You can add apps, bookmarks and contacts and their icons will be resized accordingly.

The icons will grow and shrink depending on how often you open them, that way it’s easy to locate your favorites. Imgy uses very few system resources and doesn’t consume too much battery life. It also supports custom launchers like GO, ADW and Apex. Unlock the full version for $0.99 to unleash all its features.

Where’s My Perry? ($0.99)

Where's My PerryFrom the makers of the hugely popular Where’s My Water? comes a game with a similar concept but a different protagonist. This time round, Perry is a fedora-sporting platypus spy from the Disney Channel cartoon Phineas and Ferb. You’ll need to help him reach his HQ for a mission briefing by guiding water to the generators powering the tubes.

There are more than 80 puzzles here across four chapters with further updates promised, so you should get good bang for your buck. These challenging physics puzzles will see you using water in its many different forms (including ice, steam and liquid) to solve them. An evil villain called Dr. Doofenshmirtz scatters lasers across the sewers and you’ll need to use them to help change the water to its different forms.
